Louisiana Blueberry Lemonade

Louisiana Blueberry Lemonade

They say when life gives you lemons, to make lemonade.

But what if life gives you blueberries too? Then what?!?

Sweet blueberries paired with zesty lemon is such a fantastic flavour combination, yet it’s so underrated. Pinterest seems to be swamped with strawberry lemonade recipes, all the while casting it’s berry good friend into the shadows.

I first had a speckled blueberry lemonade at Bubba Gumps in Orlando and I fell in love. I fell even more in love a few years later (older and wiser) when I had the very same lemonade but this time served with a splash (or two!) of yummy citrus rum.

So when I was concocting a drinks menu and needed a cocktail for a drinks dispenser to coordinate with my Southern American theme, there seemed no better option than to recreate a pitcher of that zingy, speckled, refreshing beverage.

My initial thought was to use a blueberry vodka, which was available for a while here in the U.K. I never tried it and as it turns out, I probably never will, as it’s pretty hard to track down. I could’ve used a citrus vodka, but decided that rather than buy a new bottle to add to our ever expanding collection, I’d rather use what I had. And anyway, the lemon juice should be zingy enough!

We served the blueberry lemonade in an 8-litre drinks dispenser, but you could just as easily make a pitcher (or two) or serve it in glass bottles. It’s important that your guests know what they’re drinking so why not download our swanky drinks tags to hang around your container of choice? You can find it in my free resource library!

Grab those lemons, crack open the vodka and let’s get the party started!

Tips & Tricks

  • If you are serving this in a drinks dispenser as we did, learn from my mistakes! Make sure to strain the mixture into the container – I didn’t and poor Darren spent a large chunk of the party trying to unclog the blueberry debris where it had blocked up the tap. Ooooooopppppssssssies!
  • Another note if you are using a drinks dispenser, remember you need to leave the lid slightly ajar. Otherwise, it creates a vacuum, nothing comes out of the tap… no one wants thirsty guests!
  • Make sure your guests are aware that it’s a boozy lemonade! It’s pretty easy to assume lemonade is a safe option for drivers and ladies incubating a human life form!

What occasion will you make this zingy, juicy concoction for? Let me know in the comments below!

Louisiana Lemonade
Ingredients
  • 500 ml water
  • 200 g sugar
  • 300 ml lemon juice freshly squeezed
  • 60 ml vodka
  • 1-2 lemons sliced
  • handful of blueberries
  • Lots of ice
Method
  1. Start by making a sugar syrup. Place the water and sugar into a pan and bring to the boil, stirring to make sure the sugar dissolves. Once it reaches boiling point, remove from the heat and leave to cool completely.

  2. Mix together the sugar syrup, lemon juice and vodka. Add plenty of ice and garnish with lemon slices and blueberries. To release the blueberry flavour and to give the lemonade a lovely colour, try crushing some of the blueberries slightly as you add them into the mix.

  1. This sounds so refreshing! It’s kind of a classed up version of regular lemonade. Love the addition of the blueberries. That’s right up my alley. 🙂

  2. Sounds like a delicious and refreshing summer drink. I chuckled with the lessons learned about using a dispenser. LOL.

  3. OMGee, This looks so good! I will need to give it a try. Thanks for sharing

  4. Wow, that looks great. It’s somewhat funny that you went with Blueberry Lemonade as a Southern U.S. drink, though, because actually blueberries don’t grow very well in the Southern U.S. (it’s too hot for them in most parts!) But lemonade definitely is Southern!

    • Hi Whitney!

Well, you learn something new everyday! I went with the lemonade vibe and ran with it; I guess in a way it’s a happy marriage because here in the UK I have two blueberry bushes which do well so long as I take good care of them.

      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  5. Hahaha I love the intro. Great Post!
